10 Months Old!

Diego is ten months old, double digits! Yet he still is a whiney baby. I think at this point it's time to chalk it up to personality rather than any issue. He is overall better and will play by himself for short periods of time, but he is still very needy and cries a lot. I hadn't taken any photos of the kids together in awhile as Callie doesn't always cooperate but I convinced her to put on some fancy clothes for some photos today. Her dialogue, I should say monologue through this entire photo shoot was that she was in a wedding and hence her flowers and she was setting up the chair to have an aisle. Where she gets these ideas is beyond me. She is feeling better, we only needed the inhaler once today which is great since it makes her such a crazy rowdy kid. Diego has a cough and a lot of booger now, so hopefully by the end of the week we will all be well.
So let's do Callie first. What is Callie up to at 2 years 10 months old? She has a vocabulary that outdoes most 5-6 year olds and she is always talking. It's rare that she is quiet. Even when she is by herself she is talking and singing. She likes to sing made up songs and is actually pretty good at singing about her day or things she knows. She is very creative and likes to role play and play pretend. She models everything she sees so I have to be careful what I say and do. She just has started to be manipulative, for the first time I caught her lying to her dad asking for something I just said no to. He said what did your mom say and she said mom said it's ok, which was absolutely not true. She has learned to open all the doors in the house including the front door with deadbolt so we installed a special lock way at the top above even our heads to keep her safe. She has been getting out of her bed and room at nap and bedtime which is a real problem. This morning she woke us up yelling from the bottom of the stairs at the gate. I've been reviewing with her the rules of staying in her room until it's time to get up. Hopefully I can get this in her head soon. Callie's current favorife show is Sid the Science Kid (at least for this week) and she loves books about the body, science, the way things work, anything explaining why. She often is explaining things and says, "that's why." She also makes excuses for why she cannot do things and they are very funny. She says my knee hurts so I can't help you pick up my toys, or My baby is so heavy and my back hurts carrying her. I am sure she gets this from me talking about D. She has become incredibly picky about food, her food groups consist of dairy and bread basically. It's so hard to get her to eat most things right now. She always says I don't know what I want, give me options. This is hysterical to me and she says it and shrugs her shoulders all at the same time. She is learning her letters and points out every R or C we see on any sign, truck, shirt, you name it she finds it. She attempts to sing the ABCs but gets them mixed up a lot. I'll try to get her on video singing this week. But enough about Callie, this post was about D!

Diego at 10 months... He loves to bang toys together. He likes to make music banging on the piano and with the drum. He can pull to stand, transition to standing using a small step or stool, and can stand for about a minute at a time without falling. He wants to walk really bad. He likes for you to hold his hands and walk around with him and he is beginning to take a few steps by himself. Ill try to get this on video too. Compared to Callie he is much more cautious. Callie learned to walk by just going, she couldn't stop or control herself and her falls were so crazy. Diego goes slower, tries to balance and falls more gracefully, generally not getting himself hurt, unless he falls onto something. He draws really fast now, but still does a side crawl with the right leg bent sideways beneath him and the left leg with the foot on the ground. He looks pretty funny but it's effective enough.
Diego really prefers solid finger foods rather than anything puréed and of course I have a whole cabinet full of baby food. His favorite food is Grandmas beans and he will pick them out of a pile of food. If he puts something in his mouth he doesn't like, he will take it baby out and make a face. He is a pickier eater than Callie was, mostly preferring fruits and beans, some breads, muffins, pancakes. He seems like he drinks a lot of water but really he just chews the spout on the sippy cup and gets all her clothes soaking wet, so we change him quite a row times everyday. He still wakes at least once a night to eat, although I swear he doesn't need to eat as when he wakes in the morning he can go for a long time without eating. I need to work on weaning him off the night feeding, or just go cold turkey and do cry it out. We haven't retested the dairy or reducing his medications lately, there has been too many other things going on. He takes two 90 minute naps but only in his bed. He cannot sleep in the stroller or car instead he just cries when he's tired.
He has no words that mean anything yet. He says da da da, ba ba ba, ga ga ga and babbles some other random sounds, in the middle of the night I swear he calls MaMa, but other than in the middle of the night I never hear it. It sounds so clear sometimes I think it's Callie, but it's not.
He has 7 teeth and one more on the way in. He's pretty chubby with fat thighs and a belly and he's working on a double chin. Most of his 9 month clothes are already too small and even some 12 months are tight, like this outfit he wore for photos today. He has a great laugh and can be pretty funny sometimes,at least when he is a happy baby.

So that's the best I can summarize these two monkeys for the age and phases we are in. I'm in the chicken with my head cut off phase still and never get time to myself. I go to bed early as I get woken up early and in the middle of the night and I chase these two around all day when I am home. It's exhausting to be a mommy but I love these two to pieces even when it's difficult at times. And a smile or a laugh helps me forget all the "other" not so happy times when we have meltdowns or cry fests.

Enjoy the photos!

Booger face
I think this one looks like my dads baby photo. I'll try to get one to compare
Best friends.... In the aging at least

Back to the doctor

I didn't take a single photo today... I was home and with both kids and Diego turned 10 months and yet no photos. Tomorrow I'll get around to it, today was just too much.
In the morning Callies pediatrician called to check on her. While she was doing better I didn't give her the inhaler for over 12 hours and she started wheezing again. She ate breakfast and was out of breath. So we decided it was best for her to see Callie again. This time I learned my lesson and didn't bring D to go with us. He stayed with Grandma thankfully.
The good news is her lungs sound better than Friday and the inhaler is working. She was worried that she could have pneumonia that just wasn't audible with a stethoscope and we were discussing having a chest X-ray when she checked her ears and discovered another ear infection. In the exact same ear as last time too! Ugh! So another round of antibiotics we go. The good news is we spared her a chest X-ray since the antibiotics would treat a pneumonia anyways. She also had to be put on steroids to help with her breathing since the wheezing was still returning three days later. This afternoon she sound better and hopefully this is really the turn around point. Luckily I'm home and so I'll keep her home from school with me all week. That should make for an interesting week.

Happy Birthday Grandpa Kiki

Callie is getting a little better with the inhaler and mask. We even practiced with her baby and her stuffed animals. It's still not fun but she is getting used to it and recognizing it helps her. The bad news is we have noticed when she has the inhaler she can't sleep. She gets all crazy and hyped up. For three days in a row she didn't take a nap even though she was in her bed for 2 hours. At night she has difficulty falling asleep even when exhausted and when we gave it to her in the middle of the night she was up for 2 hours! Yikes. So I'm trying to see if she is doing better enough to go without it. She is coughing less so tonight I put her to bed without it. She fell right asleep which was a great start. Now I just hope she sleeps all night.
Today was Grandpa Kiki's birthday. It was tough as both kids are still sick but we didn't want to miss his birthday. We did our best to make it a successful trip, keeping Callie away from Ford and keeping everyone happy. Callie and I made a special egg and dairy free cake with strawberries and gummy bears! Callie picked the flavor and topping. It was actually good too. Both kids were having a meltdown by the time we went home but we still had a good time celebrating PaPa. Callie painted him some rocks, one for his desk and one for his garden and then a few extra just for fun. She was so funny telling him what it was before he even opened it. She can't keep a secret! Happy Birthday Grandpa!

Getting better :)

Callie's breathing treatments and inhaler really helped. Last night she slept almost through the whole night and even slept in this morning. Her coughing is less frequent and she can go 4-5 hours between without coughing fits when she uses the inhaler. The bad news is she hates it and totally doesn't cooperate which means we just have to restrain her and force her to do it. If she would just let us hold it in her face for 5 seconds life would be good. Her rash is almost completely cleared up from the steroid cream they prescribed too. She was back at her typical Callie antics and trouble making today which lets us know she is feeling better. She didn't even nap! She stayed in her room for two hours singing and talking to her baby. She was exhausted by bedtime. Hopefully by tomorrow she is much much better.
She must have spread her illness to Diego because he was coughing all last night. His cough is dry but just wakes him in the night. We have his humidifier on tonight so hopefully that helps with the cough and he beats it fast. In other news he really wants to walk. He can push the push toy walker (both standing up and crawling with his hands on it) and is taking a few steps at a time. I'll work on getting a video soon. I took out the toy music table and D loves it. I almost forgot we put it away in the closet. It's the perfect height. He can pull to stand and cruise side to side.
And another positive today, Enrique came and patched our leaky roof for the time being. So now we can rest through this crazy rain storms and fix it when it's drier again.
Ahhhh a little relief all around.maybe I can sleep without grinding my teeth now, just maybe.

The no good very bad terrible rotten day

There's a book with a title something about a rotten day. Well that was my day today. I ended up taking Callie to the doctor for a check up since she was wheezing and the cough had gotten really bad. She also hasn't been eating well has a sore red throat, stomach pain and a terrible rash. What I thought would be a somewhat harmless appointment turned into two hours of torture. Callie had to have two nebulizer breathing treatments and let's just say she wasn't cooperative. I had both kids, so Diego was strapped in the stroller and I held Callie down. There was so much screaming from both kids I'm sure all the other patients thought there was a torture device in my room. They lasted 30 minutes and we had to do it twice! The second time went slightly smoother but still it was rough. At least they really helped and by the time we were done her lungs sounded clear and she could breathe again. I even got her to snap a photo to send to daddy to show how "brave" she was being. This idea sorta worked for a few minutes. Callie most likely has asthma but they aren't rushing to diagnose her. Instead they are calling it reactive airway disease and giving her an inhaler for home use. If she gets worse we have to bring her back to the hospital. I'm hoping she continues to do as well as she has since we came home.
Then I had just enough time to drop the kids for nap time to rush to the dentist for a 90 minute repair of my cracked and broken filling I got from grinding my teeth.
Talk about a day of headaches. 2 hours of screaming followed by 2 hours of drilling. Not my idea of a fun day. Let's hope tomorrow goes better...
But then again I still have a leaky roof and it's supposed to rain the next 5 days! No good terrible bad luck I tell you.

Two weeks of maternity leave

So I'm officially off for two plus weeks to finish up my maternity leave. It's seems a little surreal that the time is up and Diego is already so big. Technically I have more time I could use before he turns one but I need to gain some vacation for my summer trip so I need to go back. For now I'll be home for two weeks hopefully enjoying my time with the kids.
So far though my agenda is not too fun. Callie is sick with a bad cough and cold again and I'm likely going to bring her to the doctor tomorrow. I have a tooth that needs a new filling tomorrow. AND just to top it off we have a leak in our roof. We just discovered this after the big rainfall earlier in the week Actually it's two separate leaks... So it's even worse. I think I'll be plenty busy for now. Plus Diego climbs on everything and wants to walk. He's a danger to himself so I'm chasing him around all day.

Big sister big helper

Callie loves being a big sister... Half of the time. Sometimes she is jealous or doesn't want to share or just wants all the attention herself, but then on occasion she really genuinely wants to do everything for her brother and help him. Today that was pushing his stroller around the block. I let her so she got more exercise than me and D was happy. Here's to hoping there is more helping than harming in his lifetime.
